Stamps of Tristan da Cunha
Situated in the South Atlantic, 1300 miles from St Helena,
Tristan da Cunha has an area of only 18 square miles.
The island was first settled in 1817 but the first recorded letter from the island was in 1836.
Before the issue of its first stamps in 1952, mail was cancelled from 1908 until 1948 by various cachets.
The island hit the headlines in October 1961 when violent volcanic activity caused the evacuation of the population.
