has been written to help answer those questions and others that you may have about collecting sheet music.
The Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University holds a significant
collection of 19th and early 20th century American sheet music. The Historic American Sheet Music Project
provides access to digital images of 3042 pieces from the collection, published in the United States
between 1850 and 1920.
A collection of over 1000 pieces of Hawaiian and Tropical themed sheet music, from 1872 to 1939.
Includes images from each piece, artist biographies, musicians, and useful links.
This website currently features sheet music published before Confederation (1867) and during the era of the
First World War (1914-1920), selected from the historical collection of the National Library of Canada.
Future phases will include digitized sheet music published between 1867 and 1913.
The Center for Popular Music is an archive and research center for the study of American popular
music from the pre-revolutionary era to the present.The Center's collection of sheet music includes
items from the late-18th century to the present. Approximately 50,000 items have been cataloged,
and may be searched online.
The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music is part of Special Collections at the Milton S. Eisenhower
Library of The Johns Hopkins University. It contains over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular
American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960. All pieces of the collection are indexed on this site
and a search will retrieve a catalog description of the pieces. An image of the cover and each page of
music will also be retrieved if the music was published before 1923 and is in the public domain.
